The release of Drupal 8 brings a lot of exciting new improvements including a more flexible, scalable and easier to use platform. We really enjoyed this great video where Dries Buytaert, the founder of Drupal, talks about the history of Drupal and how it began.
Back in August of 2011, Dries began to talk about plans for Drupal 8. While the actual release was quite a ways away, there were a few core initiatives set in place to guide the development process. Some of those included a multilingual initiative, a focus on mobile first, and enabling themers and designers to do great things. These core initiatives, among others, definitely carried through to the Drupal 8 we have today.
Drupal 8, with over 200 new features and improvements, was built so individuals with small sites as well as organizations with some of the largest sites in the world could all use Drupal. Drupal 8 helps us move from simply creating websites to creating digital experiences.
“Drupal 8 is built to support a mobile-first, multichannel world.” -Acquia
This means that many of the new features in Drupal 8 will be incredibly impactful for sites moving forward. Some of these improvements include:
- Easier authoring for creating content quickly and easily
- Mobile-first so everything is responsive to all devices and screen sizes
- Multichannel content delivery for this post-browser era
- Faster performance so we can deliver personalized, dynamic content quickly
- Multilingual for translating sites into any language
- Integration focused so that Drupal will easily integrate with your digital marketing stack
“If you were around for the transition from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7, you probably remember how different the new version of Drupal was compared to its predecessor. If things like YAML, PSR-4, dependency injection, namespaces, controllers, routers, and Symfony plugins are new to you, be prepared to feel that all over again--and to a greater level. But that's a good thing! You'll be learning how to leverage these things to build amazing Drupal 8 sites!” - Scott Weston, Director of Development at Duo Consulting

Drupal 8 has power for administrators, simplicity for editors and accessibility for everyone. Administrators can customize components more easily than ever before. You can structure more field types and add SEO-friendly meaning simply as well. For editors, better previews and drag-and-drop image uploads makes creating compelling content more efficient. Plus, the in-context editing mode means you can make changes quickly and easily with only the tools you need.
Thank you and congratulations to all the contributors! You have a lot to be proud of. Are you ready to #Celebr8D8?
